How to Measure Shrink Bags for Gift Baskets

Getting the right size shrink bag is critical for professional-looking gift baskets. Too small and the bag won't fit; too large and you'll waste material. Follow our simple 3-step process to measure your basket perfectly every time.

Why Proper Sizing Matters

Shrink bags that fit correctly create a tight, professional seal that protects contents and enhances presentation. The right size also minimizes material waste and reduces your packaging costs.

Step 1: Measure Basket Width

Using a flexible measuring tape, measure the entire circumference of the basket at its widest point (usually the top). This means wrapping the tape all the way around the basket.

  • Add 10% to that measurement
  • Divide by 2
  • Round up to the nearest even number

Example: 40" circumference + 10% = 44" ÷ 2 = 22" width (your bag width)

Step 2: Measure Basket Height

Measure from the top of the basket, over the handle (if present), and down to the bottom. Then come back up the other side to the top.

  • Add 10% to that measurement
  • Divide by 2
  • Add 6-8 inches if you want a decorative plume or frilled top

Example: 36" total + 10% = 39.6" ÷ 2 = 19.8" (round to 20") + 8" plume = 28" height

Step 3: Find Your Perfect Shrink Bag Size

Shop our shrink wrap basket bags — all sizes listed as width × height in inches. Match your measurements to find the perfect fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you measure a shrink bag for a gift basket?

Measure the basket's full circumference at its widest point, add 10%, divide by 2, and round up to the nearest even number — that is your bag width. For height, measure from the top of the basket, over the handle, down to the bottom and back up the other side, add 10%, divide by 2, then add 6–8 inches if you want a gathered plume on top. A 40" circumference basket needs a 22" wide bag; a 36" over-the-top measurement with a plume needs about a 28" height.

What size shrink bag do I need for my gift basket?

A small 12" diameter basket typically takes an 18" × 24" shrink bag, a medium 15" basket takes 24" × 30", and a large 18" basket takes 30" × 36". All Prism Pak shrink basket bags are listed as width × height in inches, so match your measured width and height to the closest size at or above your numbers.

What if my measurements fall between shrink bag sizes?

Always round up to the next available size. Extra film gathers neatly at the top when heated, but a bag that is even slightly too small will not close over the basket.

Can shrink bags be used on baskets with handles?

Yes. Include the handle in your height measurement by running the tape up and over it, and the shrink film will conform tightly around the handle shape when heat is applied.

What gauge shrink film should I use for gift baskets?

Most gift baskets use 75 to 100 gauge shrink film. Heavier or sharper-cornered baskets should use 100 gauge for puncture resistance. See our guide on choosing the right bag thickness for more detail.

Are shrink bags food safe for edible gift baskets?

Yes. Prism Pak shrink bags are made from FDA-compliant, food-safe material, so they can be used over baskets containing food, candy, baked goods, and other edible items.
