Frequently Asked Questions About Kwik Fill Pre-Opened Bags

What are Kwik Fill pre-opened bags?

Kwik Fill™ pre-opened bags are polyethylene bags supplied on a roll, pre-slit and perforated so each bag is already open and ready to fill. They are wound on 3-inch cores for use in automated bagging machines or on manual packing stations, and are stocked in 1.5 mil, 2 mil, 3 mil, and 4 mil gauges in both clear and white-back/clear-front styles.

What is the difference between Kwik Fill and Autobag bags?

Kwik Fill™ and Autobag® are two brands of the same product type — pre-opened poly bags on rolls for automated packaging. Kwik Fill uses the same perforation and pre-slit design and runs on most automated bagging machines, including Autobag® systems. The practical difference is branding and price: Kwik Fill offers comparable quality at lower wholesale cost.

Can I use Kwik Fill bags by hand without a machine?

Yes. Although designed for automated baggers, Kwik Fill pre-opened bags work well for manual hand-filling at a packing station, and the pre-opened mouth is noticeably faster than opening a standard flat bag. If you hand-fill in low volume and do not need the speed, plain lay flat poly bags cost less per bag.

Are Kwik Fill pre-opened bags food safe?

Yes. Kwik Fill pre-opened bags are FDA-compliant and food safe for direct contact with fresh produce, bakery items, deli meats, and other foods. They are made from virgin polyethylene and meet USDA specifications for food packaging.

What thickness of pre-opened bag should I choose?

Match the mil gauge to product weight: 1.5 mil for light-duty work such as bakery items, soft goods, and lightweight produce; 2 mil for most food service and retail packaging; 3 mil for heavy-duty use with meats, frozen foods, and bulkier items; and 4 mil for industrial parts, sharp-edged items, and maximum puncture protection. If you are unsure, contact our packaging team for a recommendation based on your product.

How many bags are on a roll?

Roll counts typically run from 500 to 2,000 or more bags per roll, depending on bag size and gauge — smaller and thinner bags yield more per roll, larger and thicker bags fewer. Exact counts are listed in the product specifications above, or contact us for a specific size.

What core size do Kwik Fill rolls use?

Kwik Fill pre-opened bags are wound on 3-inch cores, the industry standard for automated bagging equipment. That makes them compatible with Kwik Fill, Autobag®, Packway, and most other automated bagging systems.

Can I get Kwik Fill bags custom printed?

Yes. We print pre-opened bags in up to 8 colors for branding, labeling, or compliance copy. Custom printed rolls generally require a minimum order of 10,000 to 25,000 bags and about a 4-week lead time. Contact us for a custom printing quote and samples.

How should pre-opened bags on rolls be stored?

Store rolls in a cool, dry place below 120°F and out of direct sunlight. Correct storage keeps the bags from blocking (sticking together) and preserves machine feed performance. Polyethylene bags have an indefinite shelf life when stored this way.

Who uses Kwik Fill pre-opened bags?

They are used anywhere volume bagging happens: meat processors and butchers, bakeries and confectioners, produce packers and grocery stores, small-parts and hardware manufacturers, medical and pharmaceutical packagers, and e-commerce fulfillment centers. Operations packing roughly 500 or more units per day get the most benefit.

Kwik Fill vs Standard Flat Bags: Which Should I Choose?

FeatureKwik Fill Pre-Opened BagsStandard Flat Bags
Best ForHigh-volume (500+ bags/day)Low-volume, varied sizes
Packaging SpeedFast (30-80 bags/min automated)Slower (manual opening required)
Labor CostLower (automation reduces staff)Higher (manual labor)
Per-Bag CostSlightly higher (pre-opening adds cost)Lower (simple construction)
EquipmentAutomated bagger or manual stationNone (hand-fill only)

Bottom line: If you package 500 or more units daily, pre-opened bags save time and labor cost. For low-volume or highly varied packaging, standard flat bags are more economical.

How to Order Kwik Fill Pre-Opened Bags

  4. Order samples: Test bags with your product and your equipment before committing to bulk (request samples).
