What is a degassing valve, and why do coffee bags have one?

A degassing valve is a one-way vent that lets carbon dioxide escape from freshly roasted coffee without letting oxygen back in. Fresh-roasted beans release CO2 for days after roasting, so the valve keeps bags from bloating or bursting while protecting the coffee from staling oxygen.

Do I need valve or non-valve coffee bags?

Use valve coffee bags for whole-bean and freshly roasted coffee, which off-gasses CO2 and needs to vent. Choose non-valve coffee bags for ground coffee, tea, or coffee that has already degassed or is shelf-stable, where venting isn't required and a simpler, lower-cost bag works well.

What size coffee bag do I need?

A 12 oz bag suits most whole-bean and ground retail offerings, and a 1 lb (16 oz) bag fits larger retail and subscription packs. Capacity depends on grind and bean density, so whole beans need a slightly larger bag than the same weight of ground coffee.

What types of coffee bags are there?

Common coffee bag styles include stand-up pouches, side-gusset (box) bags, flat- or square-bottom bags, and tin-tie bags, each available with a degassing valve or a resealable zipper. The right style depends on shelf presence, how you fill the bag, and whether customers reseal it between uses.

How are coffee bags sealed, and are they resealable?

Most coffee bags are heat-sealed across the top for an airtight closure. Add a press-to-close zipper or a tin-tie when customers need to reseal the bag between uses, and a one-way degassing valve can be combined with any of these closures.

Should I choose kraft, black, or white coffee bags?

Kraft coffee bags give a natural, artisan look; black bags read premium and block light to protect the coffee; and white bags offer a clean surface for labels and bright branding. All three are available in valve and non-valve styles.
