Side gusseted poly bags are expandable bags with pleated left and right sides that open out when the bag is filled, creating a flat bottom and vertical walls so the package stands upright on a shelf or in a shipping carton. They are used most often for bakery goods and bread, coffee beans and loose leaf tea, pet food and treats, bulk dry goods, and hardware or small parts.

For food applications we recommend heat sealing, which gives the best freshness barrier and a tamper-evident closure.

Common side gusset sizes run from small bakery bags around 4" x 2" x 12" up to large bulk bags around 20" x 10" x 40", and side gusset bags are always measured as width x gusset x length. A side gusset bag has its expandable pleats on the left and right sides, so the bag forms a rectangular column when filled; a bottom gusset bag expands only at the base. Side gusset bags give better shelf stability and a cleaner retail face, while bottom gusset bags are more common for bulk and industrial filling.

Side gusseted poly bags are sealed four ways: a heat sealer for an airtight, tamper-evident seal (best for food), twist ties for a quick reusable closure, bag tape for light-duty applications, and staples for economical non-food packing. Polyethylene seals cleanly on any standard impulse or bar sealer.

Choose 1.5 to 2 mil for light items such as bakery goods and paper products, 3 to 4 mil for medium weight contents like coffee, hardware, and general packaging, and 6 mil or heavier for sharp or heavy products that need extra puncture resistance. One mil equals 0.001 inches, so a heavier mil means a stronger, stiffer bag.
