How to Measure Round Objects for Poly Bags
Getting the right bag size starts with accurate measurements. Here's how to measure round or cylindrical items:
- Diameter: Measure straight across the widest point of your round object
- Height: Measure from bottom to top of the item
- Add clearance: Our calculator automatically adds 0.5" for sealing and presentation
Flat Bags vs. Gusseted Bags for Round Objects
Flat Poly Bags work best for round objects when the bag width is calculated using the circumference formula (π × diameter). This creates a tube effect that wraps around your item.
Square Gusseted Bags are ideal for round items that need more structured presentation or when you want a "gift bag" look with a tie-top. The gusset (expandable sides) accommodates the diameter while keeping the bag shape neat.

The Math Behind Bag Sizing for Round Objects
Flat Bag Formula:
- Width: π × diameter + 0.5" clearance
- Length: height + 0.5" clearance
Why multiply by π (3.14)? Because you need enough bag width to wrap around the entire circumference of your round object. The circumference of a circle = π × diameter.
Gusseted Bag Formula:
- Width + Gusset: (bag width × 2) + (gusset × 2) ≥ circumference
- Height: must exceed object height + tie/seal space
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much extra space should I add to my bag size?
A: We recommend 0.5" clearance for most items. Add 1" if you need heat-sealing space or a decorative tie-top.
Q: Can I use a flat bag for round objects?
A: Yes! Flat bags work great for round items when sized correctly using the circumference formula. They're more economical than gusseted bags.
Q: What if my calculated size doesn't match a standard bag?
A: Round up to the next standard size. Most manufacturers offer stock sizes in 0.5" or 1" increments.
Q: Are these bags FDA approved for food items?
A: Our food-safe poly bags meet FDA requirements for direct food contact. Look for "FDA approved" in the product description.
