How to Measure Poly Bags: Complete Sizing Guide

Getting the right bag size matters. Too small and your product won't fit. Too large and you're wasting money on excess material. This guide shows you exactly how to measure flat bags, gusseted bags, and reclosable poly bags so you order the perfect size every time.

Quick Reference: All poly bag measurements are inside diameter (ID). Width is always listed first, followed by length, then gauge (thickness). Measurements are in inches.

  • Width = Opening across the top of the bag
  • Length = Usable depth from top to bottom
  • Gauge = Film thickness (not needed for sizing, but important for strength)

Side Gusset Bags: Width x Gusset x Length x Gauge
Bottom Gusset Bags: Width x Length x Gusset x Gauge

Measuring Cello Bags FlatMeasuring for Flat Bag: Width x Length

Width = Opening of bag (across the top of the bag)
Length
= Usable portion of bag (from top to bottom of the bag)
Gauge
= Film thickness, measured in mils or microns

Example
Width
= 8 inches
Length
= 5 inches
Gauge = .002 inches

Bag size is written as: 8" x 5" 2 mil

Measuring Cello Bags SquareMeasuring for Side Gusseted Bags: Width x Gusset x Length

Width = Across opening of the bag (with gusset tucked in)
Gusset
= Depth or Distance across the open face of side pleat
Length
= From the opening to the bottom of the bag
Gauge
= Thickness of bag, measured in mils.

Example:
Width
= 8 inches
Gusset
= 5 inches
Length
= 10 inches
Gauge
= .002 inches

Bag size is written as: 8"x 5" x 10" 2 mil

Measuring Reclosable Bags ImageMeasuring for a Reclosable Poly Bag: Width x Length x Gauge

Bags are measured width by length. Width is the outside dimension. Depth is measured from the bottom of the zipper to the bottom of the bag. Due to reinforced side seals, bag openings are approximately 1/2" less than their listed width.

Width = Across opening of the bag (with gusset tucked in)
Length = From the opening to the bottom of the bag
Gauge
= Thickness of bag, measured in mils.

Example:
Width
= 8 inches
Length = 10 inches
Gauge
= .002 inches

Bag size is written as: 8" x 10" 2 mil

measuring shrink bags for gift baskets

How to Measure Shrink Bags for Gift Baskets

Getting the right size shrink bag is critical for professional-looking gift baskets. Too small and the bag won't fit; too large and you'll waste material. Follow our simple 3-step process to measure your basket perfectly every time.

Why Proper Sizing Matters

Shrink bags that fit correctly create a tight, professional seal that protects contents and enhances presentation. The right size also minimizes material waste and reduces your packaging costs.

Step 1: Measure Basket Width

Using a flexible measuring tape, measure the entire circumference of the basket at its widest point (usually the top). This means wrapping the tape all the way around the basket.

  • Add 10% to that measurement
  • Divide by 2
  • Round up to the nearest even number

Example: 40" circumference + 10% = 44" ÷ 2 = 22" width (your bag width)

Step 2: Measure Basket Height

Measure from the top of the basket, over the handle (if present), and down to the bottom. Then come back up the other side to the top.

  • Add 10% to that measurement
  • Divide by 2
  • Add 6-8 inches if you want a decorative plume or frilled top

Example: 36" total + 10% = 39.6" ÷ 2 = 19.8" (round to 20") + 8" plume = 28" height

How to Measure Vacuum Seal Bags and Vacuum Pouches

Choosing the right vacuum bag size is critical for a proper seal. Too small and your food won't fit; too large and you waste material. This guide explains exactly how to measure vacuum seal bags for food storage, sous vide cooking, and commercial packaging.

How Vacuum Bag Dimensions Are Measured

Vacuum bags are measured width × length in inches (the flat, unfolded size). For example, a 10" × 13" vacuum bag means:

  • Width: 10 inches (side to side when laid flat)
  • Length: 13 inches (top to bottom)

Important: Measurements refer to the internal bag dimensions (the usable space inside). Always add 2-3 inches to your product length to allow room for sealing.

Step-by-Step: Measuring Your Product

1. Measure the Item Width

Lay your product flat (or at its widest point). Measure side-to-side. Add 1 inch for clearance and sealing space.

2. Measure the Item Length

Measure from top to bottom. Add 3 inches minimum to allow for:

  • 2 inches at the top for sealing
  • 1 inch at the bottom for clearance

For reusable bags (cut and reseal), add 4-5 inches so you can trim and reseal multiple times.

3. Consider Product Thickness

Vacuum bags are flat (2D), but your product is 3D. If your item is thick (steaks, bulky vegetables), the bag needs extra width to wrap around. Add half the product thickness to your width measurement.

Common Vacuum Bag Sizes by Use Case

Product Type Recommended Size
Individual steaks, chicken breasts6" × 10" or 8" × 12"
Family-size portions (4-6 servings)10" × 13" or 11" × 16"
Whole roasts, brisket, large cuts12" × 18" or 14" × 20"
Sous vide vegetables, sides6" × 10" or 8" × 12"
Bulk dry goods (coffee, flour)10" × 16" or 12" × 18"
Liquids, soups, sauces (freeze flat)8" × 12" or 10" × 13"

Vacuum Pouch Volume Guide

Not sure how much a bag holds? Use this capacity reference:

  • 6" × 10": 1-2 cups (~8-16 oz)
  • 8" × 12": 3-4 cups (1 quart)
  • 10" × 13": 6-8 cups (1.5-2 quarts)
  • 11" × 16": 10-12 cups (2.5-3 quarts)
  • 12" × 18": 1 gallon+

Tips for Perfect Vacuum Sealing

  • Leave 2-3 inches of empty space at the top for a strong seal
  • For liquids: Freeze flat first, then vacuum seal (prevents liquid from being sucked into the machine)
  • For sharp items: Wrap in paper towel to prevent punctures
  • Label before sealing: Write contents and date on the bag with a permanent marker

What Mil Thickness Do I Need?

Vacuum bag thickness (mil) affects durability and puncture resistance:

  • 3 mil: Standard for home food storage, sous vide, light commercial use
  • 4 mil: Heavy-duty for bones, frozen goods, long-term freezer storage
  • 5-6 mil: Industrial-grade for commercial kitchens, sharp or abrasive items

Common Poly Bag Sizing Questions

How do you measure a poly bag?

Poly bags are measured width first, then length, then gauge, using inside dimensions in inches. Width is the opening across the top of the bag and length is the usable depth from the top to the bottom. A bag listed as 8" x 5" 2 mil is 8 inches across the opening, 5 inches deep, and 0.002 inches thick. Side gusset bags add a third dimension and are written width x gusset x length x gauge, such as 8" x 5" x 10" 2 mil.

How much clearance should I leave when measuring for poly bags?

Add 1-2 inches to your product's width and 2-3 inches to the length for a proper fit. This clearance allows for easy insertion and prevents stretching the bag, which can weaken the material. For bulky or irregularly shaped items, add extra room. If you're packaging items for shipping, consider additional space for padding materials like bubble wrap.

What's the difference between gauge and mil thickness?

Gauge and mil both measure bag thickness, but use different scales. 1 mil = 0.001 inches. Common conversions: 2 mil = approximately 200 gauge, 4 mil = 400 gauge. Thicker bags (higher gauge/mil) are stronger and better for heavy or sharp items. For most general-purpose packaging, 1.5-2 mil poly bags or 1.2-1.5 mil cello bags work well.

How do I measure for gusseted bags if my product is 3-dimensional?

For a box or cube-shaped item, measure the widest face for the bag width, then measure the depth of the item for the gusset size. The length is measured from top to bottom. Example: For a 4" x 4" x 6" box, you'd want a bag roughly 5" wide x 5" gusset x 7-8" length to allow for closure space. Contact us if you need help determining the right gusseted bag size for your specific product.

Why are reclosable bag openings smaller than the listed width?

Reclosable poly bags have reinforced side seals that strengthen the zipper closure. These seals reduce the actual opening by approximately 1/2 inch. An 8" wide reclosable bag will have roughly a 7.5" opening. Always account for this when measuring products that need to fit through the zipper opening. If your product is exactly 8" wide, order a 9" bag width.

Can I use the same measurement method for cello bags and poly bags?

Yes. Cellophane bags and poly bags are measured the same way: width x length x gauge. The main difference is material—cello bags are crystal clear and biodegradable, while poly bags are more durable and water-resistant. Both use inside diameter (ID) measurements.
