A 1 mil poly bag is a plastic bag with a wall thickness of 0.001 inch, since one mil equals one thousandth of an inch. Ours are lay flat bags made from 100% virgin low density polyethylene (LDPE), with an open top and two flat panels and no side or bottom gussets. It is the thinnest and lowest cost thickness we stock in this style.

The strongest closure is an impulse heat sealer, which fuses the open top into a permanent, tamper-evident seal and is what we recommend for food. Twist ties and plastic bag ties give a fast reusable closure, and tape works for basic shipping or storage. At 1 mil the film seals quickly, so use a low heat setting and a short dwell time to avoid burning through.

A lay flat bag is two flat panels sealed on three sides with no expansion, so it suits flat or thin products. A gusseted bag adds folded panels on the sides or bottom that open out to give the bag depth for bulkier, boxier items. For the same stated width, a gusseted bag holds noticeably more volume.
